• Going to a salon to get your hair colored isn't exactly cheap, so why ruin it with too much sun or chlorine? I got my own hair done by Kyle White, lead colorist at Oscar Blandi Salon, and while sitting in his chair, I got some amazing tips for keeping hair looking its best during the summer.

  • "The sun bleaches out paint jobs on cars and fades fine art, which is why museums don't hang fine art in direct sun light," says White. "As far as I'm concerned, hair color is art, so keep it covered when in direct sunlight." He suggests using a floppy hat (or fedora, like Jennifer Lawrence) or a silk scarf when heading outdoors.

  • "Just like your dermatologist says use sun block for your skin every day, I say use sun block for your hair every day." Kyle suggests Krastase Micro-Voile Protecteur ($37, Kerastase-usa.com) for your hair. "It's not the least bit oily, and it won't weigh down your locks like some other products."

  • We sure hope model Candace Swanepoel sprayed a protective serum onto her hair before diving into the water. White reminds us, "Imagine what would happen to your favorite dress or Manolos if you dunked them in salt water or chlorine, and then laid it out in the sun - that's what you're doing to your highlights." Run a product like Kiehl's Color-Protect Shine Infusing Hair Oil Treatment ($25, Kiehls.com) or Shu Uemura Essence Absolue ($68, Shuuemuraartofhair-usa.com) through your hair before going into the water, and then be sure to rinse hair with fresh water when you get out of the ocean or pool.

  • "Healthy hair holds color longer," says White, "so I always recommend doing a deep conditioning treatment once a week." Try Paul Mitchell's After-Sun Replenishing Masque ($18.99, Paulmitchell.com) or Oribe's Masque For Beautiful Color ($59, Oribe.com) for hydrated hair.

    Make Hair Look New Again

  • Another option to keep beautiful color, like Sofia Bush's, is to try a color-extending treatment. At the Sam Brocato Salon in NYC, they mix a client's exact demi-permanent hair color shade into a nourishing repair treatment that is used weekly in place of shampoo and conditioner. It's an easy way keep color looking fresh and vibrant.
