4 Ways to Pump Up Hair’s Volume

Don't let voluminous hair hibernate this winter.

Beach waves may be in hibernation, but full voluminous hair should never be. Upgrade the pin-straight fall style this winter by adding volume on top, on the sides, all around—the options are endless. With these products and simple techniques, limp hair will be a thing of the past.

Tease with Dry Shampoo
Teasing with a comb can get messy—and who wants to brush out those knots at the end of the night? Instead, apply a texturizing spray or dry shampoo all over the hair, from root to tip. Rough up the cuticles using your fingers, massaging the product in. This creates just as much height as the traditional technique.

Spray in Instant Volume
Spray Oscar Blandi Pronto Texture & Volume Spray ($25, oscarblandi.com) on wet or dry hair for perfectly undone texture. The volume spray also has keratin to pump up the hair follicle over time for stronger, thicker strands.

Bulk Up the Roots
With built-in proteins and extracts, Fat Hair Root Lifter Spray ($6.99, fat-hair.com) adds instant height. A simple styling tip: After spraying the roots, work the product through the hair with your fingers, then scrunch the ends to create movement and finish with a diffuser. For even bigger body, use a curling wand to wrap strands from root to mid-shaft.

Add Lift to an Updo
It’s called an updo for a reason. Make sure the style has height on top to keep the hair from looking limp (or worse, greasy). One of our favorites heightened ‘dos this winter? Nina Dobrev‘s textured braided bun. Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist Marcus Francis not only used dry shampoo to add texture and a tease, he started with Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse ($2.89, suave.com) on damp hair and rough dried with his hands and a blowdryer.
