As a beauty editor, it's my job to not only know the hottest trends, but to rock them myself. Whether the inspiration comes from the red carpet or the runway, I'm always trying out the latest hip looks. Fall is a particular favorite season of mine because the trends are more about making a statement with rich colors and bold textures. With my insane schedule, I don't have time to spend hours in front of the mirror, so my must-haves aren't just trendy; they're quick, easy and practically effortless to do.
I've never been a huge fan of black eyeliner--it's tricky to apply and always ends up smudging. But after seeing the gorgeous cat-eye looks backstage at Fashion Week, I decided it was time to give black liner another shot. I'm digging this Tarte liquid liner ($22, tartecosmetics.com) because not only does it glide on super-smoothly, it also stays put. I mean really stays put--I couldn't rub, smudge or smear it, no matter how hard I tried. It also contains good-for-your-lashes ingredients like soybean and a plant-derived peptide said to promote lash growth.
In the summer, I'm all about glossy lips, but come fall, it's time to switch to a sexy matte lipstick. My biggest problem with matte is that it can be drying, so if your lips aren't in pristine shape, they wind up looking dried-out, cracked and flaky. The Bliss Fabulips Treatment Kit ($45, blissworld.com) has everything you need to keep your pout looking, well, fabulous: A sugar scrub to buff away flakes, a peptide-infused plumper for immediate lip inflation, a hydrating balm to nourish and soften, and a foaming lip cleanser to wash off every last trace of lipstick.
I am a self-proclaimed nail polish addict--I own over 40 different bottles of polish (and counting). You'd think I couldn't possibly get excited over any more nail hues, but I actually squealed when the Dolce & Gabbana Intense Nail Lacquer in Chocolate ($20, saks.com) came across my desk. Decadent is really the only word that can aptly describe this rich, gorgeous cocoa color--it's just so sophisticated and luxe. It makes any outfit I'm wearing seem instantly more expensive and chic. I'll be sporting this mocha mani straight through to spring.
Ever since I started reading The Man Repeller blog, I've been determined to start my own arm party--wearing a multitude of bracelets on one or both arms--but I lack the treasure trove of bracelets needed to create it. Stocking up on individual bracelets can be pricey, which is why I'm a fan of multi-strand options like this Hive & Honey Wrap Bracelet ($38, piperlime.com). It looks like you're sporting an armful of fabulousness, when, in reality, it's just one easy and highly affordable piece.
My attitude towards my hair is that I want it to look good with only minimal effort. That means starting off with a healthy base. You can have the most elaborate style ever, but if your hair is damaged, you're going to look like a wreck. Kevin Murphy's Young.Again ($39, kevinmurphy.com.au) is infused with safflower seed oil, horse chestnut seed, and immortelle to provide lightweight hydration and essential nutrients. It leaves my strands shiny, soft, bouncy, and strong--exactly what hair should be. It's the perfect jumping off point for crafting a cool 'do.
The one essential I always pack in my bag is an eyeshadow palette. I often go to glitzy events straight from the office and have zero time to create an evening-appropriate look. Bobbi Brown's Sand Tortoise Shell Eye Palette ($60, bobbibrown.com) --inspired by the makeup guru's signature frames--features an array of warm shades that flatter pale complexions like mine. By day, I use one of the lighter hues as a wash on my lids, then layer on a few of the darker hues at night to glam up my style.
Healthy skin is always in, so I'm obsessive about my skin care regimen. Sunscreen (an absolute must!), serums, eye creams, masks, peels, treatments--I use it all and am constantly on the lookout for something else that promises to make my skin look flawless. I love the DDF Amplifying Elixir ($70, sephora.com), a treatment that boosts the efficacy of the products you already use. Apply it twice a day, after cleansing, and its potent, "purified" botanicals will supercharge your moisturizer, strengthening skin's moisture barrier and leaving your complexion soft, smooth and hydrated.
A bold lip is one of my all-time favorite makeup trends. I just love how dramatic and sexy a dark pout is. Unfortunately, the darker the lip color, the more high-maintenance it is. You have to constantly reapply and your lips just get drier and drier as the day goes by. The Ilia Pure Lip Care Lip Conditioner in Arabian Nights ($24, iliabeauty.com)--made with certified organic cocoa butter, jojoba oil, and vitamin E--hydrates lips so they don't dry out. It goes on so smoothly, keeps my lips feeling plush, and imparts the most gorgeous berry tint I've ever had the pleasure of wearing.
I covet long, feathery lashes, but I really dislike wearing mascara because it always smudges, giving me raccoon eyes (so not hot). Thanks to Le Mtier De Beaut Peau Vierge Lash Growth Serum ($95, lemetierdebeaute.com), I can ditch the messy mascaras--its protein-building, nourishing formula thickens and strengthens my fringe, resulting in naturally lush lashes that last, even after you stop using it. It features a patented delivery system that claims to boost its absorption, so you get noticeably thicker lashes in just two weeks time.
There's something that's just so undeniably cool about a biker boot. Maybe it's the tough girl appeal, or the fact that you can pretty much wear them with anything, but I need this pair from Madewell ($248, madewell.com) in my life. Pricey? Yes, but a good pair of biker boots like these will last forever and will only look cooler as you break them in. A definite fashion investment that is so worth it in the long run.
